Robinhood's Resistance

I have just watched the latest Robinhood movie starring Russel Crowe as the main character, Robinhood. From that movie, different cultural and political issues can be pulled out even from the very beginning of the story until it ends for another beginning. These conflicts creates a more complex way of living in this type of settings, however, it is more exciting as it enables the people to do something like what Robinhood did. This kind of movie should be viewed by people who thinks and believes in concept of power and resistance.

The film, basically, talks about the story of Robin Hood before he became the contemporary image of Robinhood which we all knew today. It aims to explain the underlying reasons how RobinHood became a generous, good hearted, however, thief of England. The story started depicting the battle between England and France. During those times, King Richard the Lionheart was the leader of the England’s crusade against France. Robin was once a committed and loyal member of King Richard and a archer expert who fights in the side of England. During the battle, King Richard was killed and therefore he was replaced by his brother King John who happens to be ignorant, coward and inefficient leader. Because of such tragedy, Robin along with his companions decided to retreat and just go home after a decade of fighting for England. In their way home, they have encountered the Englishmen, lead by Sir Godfrey, who ambushed the Royal guard of the King. Robin and his companion steal the armor and ship of the Englishmen so that they could return home safely. Before leaving, Robin promised a dying knight, named Robert Loxely, to return his sword to his father Sir Walter Loxley.

Upon the arrival of Robin and his companion to England, Robin was recognized as Robert Loxely and was the one who informed the death of King Richard. As Robin’s desire to fufill his promise to Robert, he went to Nottingham, a place of the original Robert Loxley and its family, to return the sword to his father, Sir Walter. There, he met lady Marian, the widowed wife of Robert who became his lover later on, however, she was distrustful of Robin at the start. Sir Walter asked Robin to continue impersonating his son Robert, for their possessions’ safety and protection purposes. In the span of his stay there, he started to recognize the cruelty of King john’s ruling. King John’s henchman and sheriff implement strong and strict type of governance which demands higher taxes and power. Because of such crisis, Robin decided to start an uprising act and became an icon of opposition against cruel acts of the administration. The last part of the film shows the victorious battle against France, where, Sir Godfrey was killed by Robin. King John sees Robin as a threat in his political career and therefore declared Robin as an outlawed. From then on, the adventure of RobinHood has started another resistance…
